The Original Gullah Festival is a vibrant celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Gullah Geechee people. Held annually over Memorial Day weekend, the event offers a welcoming and immersive cultural experience for local residents and visitors from across the nation and beyond. In addition to showcasing traditional Gullah crafts, food, and performances, the festival includes educational components that highlight both the historical significance of the Gullah Geechee and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Why Sustainability Matters
Recognizing the growing need to align cultural events with sustainability goals, Palmetto Futures conducted an environmental sustainability assessment of the 2025 festival. This assessment was designed to identify areas of strength and opportunity related to waste management, energy use, transportation, water conservation, and green procurement practices. The findings serve as a foundation for developing a long-term sustainability strategy and provide a replicable blueprint for future festivals.
Sustainability Assessment
To guide this work, our team developed a structured framework that ensured the assessment was both efficiently executed and meaningful in its outcomes. The approach outlined below is intended to be adaptable, replicable, and relevant for both the Original Gullah Festival and similar community-centered events. Below is an outline for how our team developed this assessment:

Goals of the Festival
Increase ecofriendly practices at the festival by collecting data to build an environmental and health eco-network that addresses local environmental pressures.
Future Festival Activities
Host eco-cultural workshops and exhibits that use local community environmental outreach initiatives
Use clean energy transportation for tours
Highlight the environmental impacts of cultural practices such as farming, fishing, and basket weaving and offer sustainable solutions
Offer free educational material on nutrition and other sustainable choices
