Palmetto Futures is excited to announce that we were awarded an Environmental Justice Mini-Grant to continue our work in Southeast Raleigh. This project will focus on improving environmental health and building food-growing knowledge in a historically Black public neighborhood. Southeast Raleigh is located near several industrial and commercial sites and no soil tests have ever been conducted. Concerns about potential contamination of heavy metals such as lead or arsenic and the lack of composting infrastructure in the area have led to the development of this project.

Our team will combine technical testing, environmental education, and youth engagement to generate meaningful data and long-term skills. The project will produce an environmental report on the soil, a public workshop for the community, and a guide to safe urban gardening and composting to ensure that food production is sustainable.
